Letter from the President
Greetings Fox River Trail Runners,

Planning for the Great Western consumes most of my spare time in April as we are getting close to race day. Fortunately it is snowing outside  this morning so I don't have to worry about mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, planting or any other yard work. I put the snow blower up already so the snow is just going to have to stay where it is until it melts. I should be able to get in a few phone calls and update  my task list this morning.

We reached the race cap of 800 runners on March 16th, and as you might imagine we still get a lot of requests from runners wanting to run our race. We really have a good thing going with both our Great Western and Viking sunset races. They have always been well attended and well executed, a good time and plenty of refreshments is what makes runners want to come back and run our race again and again.

We had a great turn out at the Cary Half Marathon and the Shamrock Shuffle. Race results are posted on our web page so check them out and let us know if we missed you.

I traveled to Springfield with Joe Arnold and some friends from the Windrunners to run in the inaugural Lincoln Memorial HM.  This was a terrific event and is definitely worth making the three hour drive to our state capitol to run the race. This was a new course that started near the capitol, took in an historic street where we ran past Lincoln's home, through some really nice residential areas, parks, and the Lincoln Memorial. The first 7 miles of the race were nice and flat, but somewhere in the last 6 miles they put in some hills that made it seem like we were back running Cary. Parking was right by the start and finish line. There were plenty of refreshments and everything went over real smooth. The weatherman even cooperated and kept the thunder storms away. All in all, my hats are off to the Springfield Road Runners Club for hosting a terrific event.

Good Luck Dick!
For those of us who have not set any specific goals, or use the excuse that it's too late in life to take on some new and bigger challenges, consider Dick Lamermayer.  Dick is a young man of 78 and this winter ran his 1,000th race. Also, he has now run a race in all 50 states.  With that milestone behind him, he has taken on a new challenge of running either a full or half marathon in all 50 states.  He has 35 states completed with 15 to go, and 4 are on the schedule for 2007.  You are a terrific example Mr. Lamermayer, and you are setting the bar pretty high for the rest of us.

Good luck, we know that you will do it.

A Book Review
The Chicago Marathon
Submitted by Gene Boehm

Many members of the Fox River Trail Runners have run the Chicago Marathon, but have you ever wondered about what all goes into the making of the Chicago Marathon? Andrew Suozzo's book, The Chicago Marathon provides a great appreciation for what makes the Chicago Marathon the Chicago Marathon.

The book is different from other marathon related books in that it is not a how to book, but rather provides a comprehensive overview of the race. It explores the history of the Chicago Marathon and provides a perspective on key aspects including the role of the race director, grass roots support, corporate and civic support, partnering charities, the media, and the various types of runners that are attracted to the race.

Andrew Suozzo provides a very thorough (well foot-noted) exploration of the Chicago Marathon.  By way of introduction, he is a professor at DePaul, a marathon runner and he has also taught courses on the Chicago Marathon exploring its impact on the city.

#6 Diesel Fuel Vs. High Octane Jet Fuel and Long Runs
By Steven Richey

I'm about to show my lack of medical knowledge, but hang with me while I draw some basic analogies that I firmly believe to be true.  It will help you understand what a long run does for you, what the purposes are for the various types of long runs.  Some of this will be a bit different than you're used to reading in the typically running magazine and will be contrary to what many folks believe.

First off, the medical folks tell us (and I have no reason to disbelieve them) that long runs encourage and facilitate the creation of additional and new capillaries for delivering more blood to the leg muscles.  This gets more fuel and oxygen to where it's needed.  It also explains why, as the long runs grow longer, that they don't really get all that much harder -- your body is adapting to them.  However, this bit of trivia doesn't really help you, since it will occur whether you know and understand it or not.  Pretty much all of your long runs, once past something around an hour and forty-five minutes, give you this benefit.
